Buy a 90-year-old Dutch canal barge, a 70-foot former commercial boat, and cruise the canals and rivers of France. Brie, Burgundy and baguettes. Snails and foie gras. Engine breakdowns and language adventures. Sounds like a dream. In On a Barge in France, Harvey Schwartz tells of the four summers he and his wife spent on Hoop Doet Leven ("Hope Gives Life") traveling the French countryside and learning to live a slower, fuller life. Each chapter offers a slice of French life, a potpourri of the classic French lifestyle that perseveres in small towns along the canals and rivers.

On a barge in France eBook Harvey Schwartz

Well written, light-hearted, and often very funny. Ended up laughing out loud - often! His descriptions of the trials and errors and joys of barge living in France were right on the mark. I do hope he'll write another book very soon. Only one criticism: French is my second language and I was dismayed by the many spelling errors of many (most?) of the French words. The most obvious? It's "bonne journée" or "bonjour", but never "bon journée". A little time with a French spell check would help (or maybe Sandra could be the spell check!). Nevertheless, I knew what he meant and the errors didn't detract from the fun read!

On a barge in France eBook Harvey Schwartz Reviews

A delightful and detailed description of a fantasy realized! Mr. Schwartz does not gloss over the often comic tribulations that confront a couple who step off on such a daring adventure -- twenty months sailing the rivers of France on a somewhat balky old barge -- but the overall message is both enchanting and delicious. The book is a perfectly inspiring hammock or airplane read. It's left me ready to burn my suits, buy a barge, and take off -- or least have the brio to try my own version of Mr. Schwartz's happy venture. Good for him for sailing off and good for us that he's written such a great job describing how he did it!
Enjoyable but would have been much better without the author adding in his political views. They make the book dated and really detract from the experience he is trying to share. It would be the same if an author constantly interjects their religious beliefs or included the wonders of their eating program.
I am leaving in a few days to spend a week on a boat in Burgundy and am so grateful that I found this book prior to my departure!! Harvey and Sandra are an inspiration and provided not only valuable advice, but a reading that was so interesting and exciting, it makes me want to get on a plane right now and extend our scheduled stay in France! Harvey has a great style in sharing their story and their love of France! I sent him an email seeking advice for our trip and he responded immediately. His blog is great with again, lots of fun information. Even with all the troubles they encountered, the overall reaction to this book is how much they enjoy this life! I highly recommend this book - even if you don't have a barge trip planned! By the time you finish this, you'll want to plan a trip! Thanks to Harvey and Sandra for sharing their ongoing journey!
Hard to put down, but necessary if you want to absorb the life of the author and his lovely wife as they travel the French canals on a beautiful old barge. I laughed so hard that the milk I was drinking came out my nose. The descriptions of the lifestyle of the French and the warmth of their hearts when meeting these two Americans really shows that we should learn a thing or two about hospitality here in the U.S.. I loved this book and hope Mr. Schwartz writes more about their retirement days living on a barge in France.
My wife and I thought this book was wonderful. Some thoughts…

First, for those looking for a book with all the practical details of buying, cruising and maintaining a barge in France - there are probably better books out there.

But, if you are contemplating a barging lifestyle in France, or if you want affirmation of your experiences on the Gallic waterways, then I doubt there is a finer tome out there.

What Harvey describes is the transformation of an attorney of note, railing against the US Supreme Court, into a passionate acolyte to the Zen of France. His humorous and eloquent descriptions of all things French, in the context of cruising Hoop Doet Leven (there is plenty of travelogue), is enjoyable and informative. This you may find in other books. What I have never found is a more convincing description of the transformative impact of French culture on someone who has become newly, and deeply involved with it. At the end, we can appreciate how France changed the fire breathing, tattooist's-champion attorney into the mild, relaxed chap who finds comfort squatting in a box labelled "send to France" - and hope that we can be similarly transformed.

If you want to cruise France in the hope of appreciating all things French, then Harvey's book will fill you with lust to get on with it. For those lucky enough to be doing it - then I’m sure much of the book will resonate with your experiences.

A delight to read, easy going, humorous in many parts, deeply passionate in others. A great experience.
This book, written in a light, humorous hand will enlighten any reader with the juxtaposition of " a normal American" couple living in France, but not as tourists. Traveling along age old canals, in their own barge, they stop and write about their many new experiences. From meeting other boaters, learning the French bakery lingo, visiting farmers, winemakers, cheese makers, trebuchets and the fabulous food it is all very different and entertaining. I rate this book 5 stars, you'll want to purchase many for friends for the holidays and let them experience first hand the many great adventures of Harvey and Sandra.
First, a warning This book may be hazardous to your (economic) health, because when you read it you may well start thinking about buying a canal barge and following Harvey Schwartz and his wife, Sandra, to the waterways of France. This warm, self-deprecating, picaresque tour of the Gallic countryside will show you a very different side of France from the familiar tourist centers like Paris, the Riviera and Lyon. This is a part of the country that is in many ways more authentic, and certainly far more varied, than what most English-speaking travelers experience. Informal, humorous and perceptive, the author can move from laugh-out-loud humor to poignant reflection in a sentence. Read this book and be transported.
