Rich in detail, deeply insightful, and sensitive to the complexity of the DeBarge family's triumphs and tribulations, Bunny details the definitive story of the DeBarge family and the world that made them. As told through her eyes, The Kept Ones Volume I, goes far beyond music. Bunny DeBarge perfectly conveys and weaves her soulful history as the lone female in the 80's Motown family super group, DeBarge; from their spectacular rise to the top of R & B music royalty, their fall from grace, to their reemerging careers.

The Kept Ones Volume 1 eBook Bunny Debarge

I was sitting in my daughter's office as I finished this book. I looked around just to complain to someone. THAT'S IT??? What a ridiculous way to end a book! Let me preference this with the fact that I was not a Debarge fan, even though Bunny Debarge and I are the same age. Nothing against them. I just thought their sound was too young for me. However, I am a ravenous reader; especially anything Motown. I love bio and autobiographies. Childhoods fascinates me. So, why was I disappointed with this book?
It wasn’t the fact that the writing was amateurish. She’s a singer, not a writer. She must have edited it herself, as well. A good copy editor would have done a better job. I loved the fact that Bunny described her experiences as a Christian. She shared her experiences about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. However, besides smoking joints, how did she spiral into hard drugs? Since she is a “kept one”, how did she get “un kept?” That’s the story I was interested in! Bunny started the book explaining that she was going back home and no one would be glad. I wanted to know why?
I would think if one is writing a volume 1, volume should have been half way written by the time the 1st one was published. Here it is years later, and I don’t know how she got on hard drugs because there is NO volume 2. BIG disappointment for me!

The Kept Ones Volume 1 eBook Bunny Debarge Reviews

Loved the story! It kept me turning page after page anticipating what would happen next! Bunny's molestation at the hands of her father brought tears to my eyes. I felt as though it happened yesterday. The way she told the story was like you were right there listening to her! I loved Debarge at the height of their career and I play their music today via You Tube. As I continued to read I was shocked when I came to the last page! What? I wanted to read more! Oh well, I hope there is a volume 2 cause "I'll Be There!"
Could have been a great book had there been better editing. I really sympathized with Bunny but this book seemed to drag on. There were a lot of things I felt that could have been summarized better or left out completely. I also did not feel it necessary for her to keep mentioning "kept ones" either. The point was made when the phrase was initially introduced. Talk about beating a dead horse! On another note, you can tell the siblings really had a genuine love for each other, which is really quite touching. I enjoyed the beginning where she speaks of arriving back to Grand Rapids after her fall from glory and the dynamic between herself and her mother. I wish she'd expounded on that more.
On another note, I can't believe the mother! It was mentioned several times throughout the book that the father probably suffered mental illness but I believe the mother did too. What woman willingly stays with a man whom she knows molested her daughter? It was as if I was reading a work of fiction - who really does that?!
I also would have liked to have read more about Bunny's life as an adult and more about her relationships with all of her siblings - not just El and Bobby. I am hoping Volume 2 is a much better edit and not as redundant and Volume 1.
I experienced all sorts of emotions while reading this memoir but I was left with many more questions and the writing style with egregious errors just made getting through the book that much more cumbersome. I was drawn to this book after watching the recent "Unsung" episode of Switch and wanted to know more about this family's dynamics.

I felt compassion for Bunny, her brothers and even her mother. The rampant abuse and dysfunction in that household should be a case study for all psychology and social work professionals. I can now see why addiction played such a prominent role in this family as they were in pain and just wanted to escape or run from it!!

However, I was alarmed when Bunny revealed that she smoked marijuana since it seemed that her young daughters were present on several occasions. I feel that this is a form of child abuse and she should have been aware of the second hand smoke exposure to her children. After all, if she experienced a "contact high" when she was first introduced to this drug, did she not have the presence of mind to know that her children could, too?

I look forward to volume two of this memoir and I hope that her writing style and the editing improves. I am now reading her brother, Tommy's book, and it is absolutely incredulous but utterly amazing so far!! It is hard to believe that he was considered the "dumb one" in the family because he had a lisp, a possible learning disability and struggled in school.

His candor is awesome and I am still struggling not to cry after reading Bunny's account and the details of dysfunction I have read in his book so far.

I love the musical accomplishments of this family and felt that they would have soared if they could have corralled their demons. I pray that they have found some peace and happiness over the years and that they will stay in a good place.
